BACKGROUND
The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) works in almost 60 countries to save wildlife and wild places through science, conservation action, education, and inspiring people to value nature. WCS has worked in Indonesia for over 20 years supporting the Ministry of Forestry (MoF) in conserving Indonesia’s biodiversity in several priority landscapes. WCS works closely with relevant government agencies, local communities, schools and universities, and the private sector.
The WCS Indonesia Program (WCS-IP) is structured under five core thematic programs: Forests; Marine; Wildlife Trade and Policy; One Health; and Rights and Communities. Within this, the Forests Program is being implemented in the five WCS-IP priority Landscapes (Leuser, Bukit Barisan Selatan, Way Kambas, Bogani Nani Wartabone and Rote Island), with core activities including protected area strengthening and wildlife management, a Sustainable Landscapes program that is addressing the two main drivers of deforestation – infrastructure development and smallholder farmland expansion – and a Bogor-based Conservation Evidence Unit, which provides support in data analysis, monitoring and evaluation, and national level policy reforms.
The Sulawesi Program is WCS-IP’s longest running program, with a continuous presence in and around Bogani Nani Wartabone National Park (BNWNP) since 1999. Support to the Bogani Nani Landscape here has prioritised landscape-level interventions that has secured important populations of endemic and threatened wildlife, such as the maleo (Macrocephalon maleo), and its habitat. At the landscape, WCS also provides technical support to the North Sulawesi Natural Resources Conservation Agency and Forest Management Unit. This will include support to a significant number of Sulawesi’s endemic species, including the babirusa, anoa, maleo, and sulawesi black macaque.
Currently, the North Sulawesi Program is undertaking a large new project supported by the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), entitled “Enabling Natural Capital Assets Across North Sulawesi’s Bogani Nani Wartabone Landscape”. The project focuses on an Enabling Natural Capital Approach (ENCA) to managing the landscape, aiming to enhance, sustain, and manages diverse Natural Capital Assets (NCA) for the benefit of nature and people. It includes work within the National Park and several adjacent forests and corridors and includes supporting the designation and management of wildlife corridors and village forests as Other Effective Conservation Measures (OECM) important to the landscape, as well as support with sustainable agricultural development in the landscape. The project thus covers the majority of WCS activities and staff working on terrestrial conservation in North Sulawesi, including the Biodiversity Conservation Coordinator.
The Sulawesi Biodiversity Conservation Coordinator will play a key role in making sure the biodiversity studies are met the highest standard of ecological science. He or she will lead in implementation of WCS-IP multifaceted biological conservation program in Sulawesi, including, but not limiting to coordinate the biodiversity monitoring in compliance with agreed work plan. The employee will also be involved in management of biodiversity data and information and provide assistance in the analysis and reports of the project, and transfer of knowledge on biodiversity research and monitoring to the key partner. The position will directly report to Northern Sulawesi Program Manager and work with other WCS-IP staff.
