Context:

Operational in Indonesia for more than 40 years, IOM Indonesia is one of the largest IOM missions in the world working on a wide range of activities in partnership with the Government of Indonesia, civil society, private sector actors, migrants, and communities. IOM Indonesia is engaged in several thematic areas, including Counter-Trafficking Labour Migration/Labour Mobility and Social Inclusion (CT-LM/LMSI), Disasters, Climate and Resilience (DCR), Immigration and Border Governance (IBG), Refugee Care, Migration Health, Migration Governance and Resettlement and Voluntary Returns.

The Refugee Care Unit contributes to the increased protection of vulnerable subgroups of displaced persons, such as unaccompanied migrant children (UMCs), victims of sexual and gender-based violence, pregnant women, and the elderly, among others, through the establishment of referral mechanisms involving the active participation of specialized state and non-state service providers.

Under the direct supervision of Programme Assistant III (Empowerment & Social Cohesion and MHPSS & Protection), in close coordination with Programme Assistant II (Empowerment & Social Cohesion) and under the overall supervision of the Programme Coordinator for Northern Region, the incumbent will implement the educational activities for refugee teenagers and adults in Batam Field Office.

Responsibilities and Accountabilities:

  • Design and deliver tailored Basic and Intermediate English for various demographics, including adult females, teenagers, and adult males.
  • Deliver basic computer classes on Microsoft Office, internet safety, mobile phone usage, and online communications.
  • Identify standard curriculum for different educational activities and adapt them to the capacity of the refugees.
  • Monitor and assess refugee students’ progress, ensuring their ability to communicate effectively, read and comprehend simple texts, and write basic to intermediate sentences.
  • Help refugee students improve their English skills and Digital Literacy through individual and group work.
  • Ensure refugee students gain practical English proficiency, understand digital safety practices, and confidently use digital tools.
  • Mark and give appropriate feedback on exercises, examinations, and home assignments, and provide student report cards at the end of each term.
  • Identify and encourage capable students to voluntarily teach fellow refugees, and provide them with teaching strategies, references, and other specific information.
  • Organize class schedule, maintain student registration and attendance records, and provide a monthly report to IOM.
  • Attend regular meetings and/or training as arranged by the organization.
  • Organize preparatory sessions for both school and higher education and furnish comprehensive evaluation reports.
  • Regularly provide feedback on students’ progress and course efficacy, suggesting improvements where necessary.
  • Undertake other duties that may be assigned from time to time that are commensurate to the position.

Required Qualifications and Experience

Education

  • University Degree in Language, Linguistics, Education, or English with a teaching qualification/ certification, with two years of relevant work experience, preferably in teaching.
  • Completed High School degree from an accredited academic institution, with 4 (four) years of relevant work experience.

Experience

  • Proven capacity and experience in language teaching in a classroom setting and/or private tutoring.
  • Proven capacity and at least four years of experience in teaching the specific subject matter (Indonesian/English/Computer/Arabic/or other subject depending on the type of education requested).
  • Solid experience in teaching both children and adults. Having experience in teaching refugees and conducting multi-grade teaching is desirable.
  • Experience or willingness to teach digital literacy.

Skills

Proficient in Microsoft Office suite and basic internet technologies.

Languages

Proficient in English and Bahasa Indonesia, both oral and written is required.
