The Environmental Justice Foundation (EJF) exists to protect the natural world and defend our basic human right to a secure environment.
EJF works internationally to inform policy and drive systemic, durable reforms to protect our environment and defend human rights. We investigate and expose abuses and support environmental defenders, Indigenous peoples, communities, and independent journalists on the frontlines of environmental injustice. Our campaigns aim to secure peaceful, equitable and sustainable futures.

EJF is working in Indonesia to end illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing and human rights abuses on fishing vessels and actively promote improvements to policy making, corporate governance and management of fisheries.
EJF is seeking to employ an Indonesia Campaigner to join its Indonesia team. This position will play a crucial role in our campaigns against illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing and in addressing human rights abuses within the fisheries industry in Indonesia.
Successful candidates should be comfortable working independently, be adept at team coordination, conducting both desk-based and field-based research, confident in public speaking, and be prepared to travel within Indonesia.

- Type of Appointment: Fixed Term
- Remuneration: $1,300 – 1,600 per month depending on experience.
- Duration of Contract: 12 months (potentially renewable or convertible to a permanent position, subject to performance review)
- Location: Bali-based with the opportunity to travel
This position is open to Indonesian citizens only.
Primary Duties:
- Lead field-based research in Bali and potentially Sulawesi, Maluku and Papua, focusing on IUU fishing practices, supply chain analysis, and labor conditions on Indonesian tuna fishing vessels.
- Coordinate and develop investigations of the impact of bottom trawling on the environment and the human rights of crew members.
- Develop relationships with EJF Indonesia campaigners and local partners to facilitate interviews with Indonesian fishermen and gather actionable intelligence.
- Organize and participate in joint inspections with government agencies for at-sea, port, and aerial monitoring.
- Analyze data from interviews to inform campaign strategies and stay informed on regional fisheries-related news.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs):
- Deliver at least one public-facing report annually on the domestic tuna fisheries industry and related issues.
- Document a minimum of seven high-quality interviews each month with relevant stakeholders.
- Promptly upload all gathered evidence to EJF databases post-engagement.
- Collaborate on at least one public-facing report based on joint inspection findings during the contract term.
- Continuously monitor and report on IUU fishing and overfishing news in the region.
Essential Qualifications:
- Native in Bahasa.
- Professional proficiency in the English language.
- A degree in any relevant discipline (journalism, social science, environmental science, marine sciences, environmental law, etc).
- Relevant work experience (NGOs, journalism, government institutions, private sectors, fieldwork, etc).
- Demonstrable experience forming and maintaining relationships with various stakeholders.
- Strong communication and writing skills.
- Ability to use desk-based internet research to gather information.
- Ability to understand the local context to build investigation and campaign strategy.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, etc) and google based. documents (Gdrive, google doc, google sheet, etc).
Desirable Experience:
- A higher degree in a relevant discipline.
- Demonstrable interest in or experience working on any of the following topics: IUU Fishing, labor fishery issues, sustainable fisheries, Illegal wildlife trade, blue carbon including mangrove issues and forestry issues.
- Professional camera experience (film or photography).
- Ability to work independently.
- Experience in conducting field-based research projects.
- Vehicle driving license.
