Opening Statement

YCKT is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Conservation Breeding Manager to join our team of passionate conservationists. The successful candidate will work with the ex-situ husbandry team on maintaining, improving and further developing conservation breeding programmes for some of Indonesia’s, and more specifically Java’s, rarest and most threatened species.

The role involves supporting all activities of CCBC, including managing the needs of CCBC, the local animal populations and the ex-situ keeping team. The Conservation Breeding Manager is required to live on-site or in the local area and is expected to be on call for emergencies. Main Duties and Responsibilities

The Conservation Breeding Manager manages all husbandry matters, breeding recommendations, human resources, record keeping and reporting of CCBC. The successful candidate will work closely with other ex-situ management personnel such as the Veterinarians and the Welfare Manager and be expected to have a strong working relationship with the CCBC Head Keeper. The Conservation Breeding Manager will report to the Strategic Director with whom the direction and activities of CCBC will be planned with. In this structure, the Conservation Breeding Manager will contribute to the long-term planning of the CCBC conservation breeding programmes, facilities and staff development.

Main duties and responsibilities of the Conservation Breeding Manager are:

  • Ensure high standards of animal husbandry, welfare and biosecurity are maintained at CCBC.
  • Manage the animal keeping; promoting an environment of open communication and hard work through leadership that fosters staff development and the progression of CCBC.
  • Coordinate and supervise all activities related to conservation breeding.
  • Contribute to the ex-situ team in improving and developing protocols related to animal husbandry, conservation breeding and welfare.
  • Maintain timely and accurate records, including inputting into the ZIMS Species 360 database.
  • Use genetic management software (ZIMS for studbooks and PMx) to create pairs that improve genetic diversity of local and international populations.
  • Manage the food and equipment needs of CCBC in line with provided budgets.
  • Production of written activity reports for the CCBC core partners.
  • Assist in production of funding proposals and reports.

Due to the conservation status of the species housed at CCBC, and the importance of CCBC within the conservation breeding network, there are multiple requirements for this role that are considered essential by the hiring team. Please read the following requirements carefully.

Essential Requirements

  • Working experience with birds under human care at a zoo, conservation center or similar working environment. Experience working with mammals is desirable.
  • Experience in the management of a team. Evident experience with capacity building and development of staff is desirable.
  • Computer literacy with a working knowledge of Microsoft Office. ZIMS Species 360 experience would be highly advantageous.
  • Oral fluency in Indonesian language.
  • Mid-level fluency in oral and written English language with a willingness to improve these skills.
  • Sensitive to different cultures and able to work within a multi-nationality team.
  • Good communication and organisational skills.
  • Ability to live and work under basic conditions in a rural area.
  • A self-disciplined and highly motivated personality.

Conditions and Remuneration

The position is a full-time with no fixed contract length. There is a 3-month initial probation period whereby either party can choose to not continue the employment at the end of this period.

  • Location: Cikananga Wildlife Center, Kec. Nyalindung, Kab. Sukabumi, West Java, Indonesia.
  • Work schedule: 07.00-11.30 and 13.00-16.00 every day, six days a week apart from on Fridays when lunch break starts at 11.00. All employees have a minimum of one-day off a week.
  • Time off: Holiday allocation is flexible for staff not originally from the surrounding area of Cikananga and will roughly equate to an additional 20 days off per year. This position will include working on weekends and public holidays.
  • Accommodation: This position includes free shared accommodation (private room with access to shared bathroom, kitchen and living room) located at the main YCKT Headquarters. Water, electricity and WiFi provided. The successful candidate is welcome to find a rented property to live in but it is essential that this is within a 20-minute drive of CCBC.
  • Benefits: For Indonesian nationals, YCKT provides Health and Employment Social Security (BPJS) and a yearly medical check-up.
  • Salary: Provided salary will be in the range of 4.000.000 – 6.000.000 IDR per month depending on previous experience. During the probation period, salary will be capped at 75%, rising to 100% after the probation period has been passed.

The Conservation Breeding Manager of Cikananga Conservation Breeding Center (CCBC) has the following duties:
Captive Collection

  • Monitor staff activities and animal husbandry at least twice a day. Checks are compulsory at the beginning of each workday and late in the afternoon.
  • Ensure a high standard of welfare, husbandry and biosecurity is maintained within CCBC.
  • Supervise and monitor the daily work of staff, inclusive of interns, at CCBC.
  • Work closely with the Head Keeper to monitor breeding activity, behaviour and health of the animals within CCBC.
  • Maintain accurate and in-depth records of all animals within CCBC in a timely fashion, recording them within local medical files and also on ZIMS.
  • Assist with any hands-on management of the birds (e.g. medication administration, moving of animals etc) or discuss plans thoroughly with the Head Keeper if this must be carried out when the Conservation Breeding Manager cannot be present.
  • With the Head Keeper, maintain important dates regarding hatching, fledging and removing offspring and ensure information is disseminated to the team.
  • Develop, maintain and update management protocols within CCBC.
  • Use genetic management software (ZIMS for studbooks and PMx) to create pairs that improve genetic diversity of local and international populations. Any plans should be discussed with the Head Keeper and the team to plan logistics of moving and determine compatibility of individuals.
  • Where applicable, breeding plans also needs to be coordinated with recommendations of an international studbook holder.
  • Work closely with the veterinary team, communicating medical issues and steps to be taken for individual cases and center wide medical protocols.
  • Join daily morning clinic meetings to discuss activities for the day ahead as well as weekly clinic meetings to discuss scheduling and bring forward medical discussions.
  • Produce regular reports (approx. three time a week) to be sent to the CCBC core partners regarding the local populations at CCBC. Reports should include all information about animal behaviour, health and management.
  • Produce a monthly report for core partner personnel summarising the monthly news of CCBC.

Facilities

  • Supervise enclosure and building maintenance as well as new construction projects carried out within CCBC.
  • Confer with internal and external teams on designs for new facilities within the CCBC.
  • Ensure the security of CCBC is at maximum level, checking locks, fence condition and protocol is being followed.

In Situ

  • Work closely with the Strategic Director and in-situ team when progressing with reintroduction
    programmes.

Administration

  • Manage the spending of CCBC in line with budgets provided by the Strategic Director.
  • Assist the Strategic Director with the production of proposal and reports, supplying information and content regarding the progress and plans of CCBC.
  • Keep a stock inventory of all veterinary, medical and supplement supplies. Ordering more as and when needed, this may involve organising contacts to bring from abroad if this cannot be bought in Indonesia.
  • With the assistance of the Head Keeper, conduct staff evaluations and appraisals to maintain motivation with the team, progression of staff and a clear vision of CCBC.
  • When required, attend meetings, conferences and summits to raise the profile of CCBC and represent YCKT.
