As we are constantly expanding, we are currently hiring to fill the following position for our office in Waisai, Raja Ampat:

Raja Ampat Ecosystem Coordinator

Raja Ampat is a model for the development of Marine Protected Areas (MPA) which, through a years-long process, has succeeded in utilizing the application of MPA in an economic, social and ecological context towards sustainable development, this is also proven by several awards received by area managers and the designation of Raja Ampat as a UNESCO GLOBAL GEOPARK. Along with the development of its use specifically for tourism, Raja Ampat has developed into a world tourist destination that is very popular with foreign and Indonesian tourists as evidenced by the increasing number of tourists using both sea transportation modes via LOB and speedboats and also land transportation. This development provides positive benefits to the community’s economy but can also pose a threat to the environment which ultimately impacts the local community’s economy. Currently, Raja Ampat really needs to pay attention to efforts to control utilization activities, especially for the tourism sector, so that a balance of environmental, economic and socio-cultural benefits can be achieved. Konservasi Indonesia provides support to ensure the implementation of sustainable tourism through programs carried out in Raja Ampat.

Konservasi Indonesia (KI) is seeking a qualified and passionate individual as Raja Ampat Ecosystem Coordiator. The responsibility of the Raja Ampat Ecosystem Coordinator in this new era of Raja Ampat MPA Management lies in assisting the local government in finding ways or approaches that ensure sustainable tourism implementation through a collaborative approach of all tourism stakeholders including government, tourism industry, NGOs and the community; building a mooring system for users using sea transportation and providing environmentally friendly tourism business guidelines specifically coral reef friendly and professional business management with attention to safety and comfort.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Facilitate and assistance  the formation of the Raja Ampat Development Partners Collaboration Forum which will produce guidelines or directions for sustainable tourism businesses which are solutions to the problems of implementing sustainable tourism in Raja Ampat.
  • Provide facilitation support to the RAMS Working Group and RAMS managers in the RAMS development process both in terms of governance, sustainable funding and implementation at the field level.
  • Supervise the work of RAMS model business development consultants and RAMS WTP studies so that they can be used by RAMS Managers and RAMS Working Groups so that RAMS can function effectively.
  • Providing solution input to regional government and partners on issues of implementing sustainable tourism in Raja Ampat.
  • Oversee the process of determining the Regional Regulation on the management of tourist destinations which is the result of a spatial study of sustainable tourism
  • Engaging with regional governments and development partners in implementing the results of the Raja Ampat Sustainable Tourism Spatial study
  • Data collection on the tourism industry in Raja Ampat.
  • Perorm other tasks assigned by supervisors and/or leaders.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Preferably degree in Spatial Planning, Marine fisheries, social economic graduates preferred or minimum 3-4 years experience in the field of conservation, development and implementation of MPAs, planning program.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
  • Knowledge and experience working with a variety of local stakeholders, including local government (national, province and district level), private sector, local NGOs, traditional leaders, coastal communities and other relevant stakeholders
  • Strong ability to manage group processes and dynamics
  • Ability to work with a team
  • Good command of English (speaking, reading and writing)
  • Ability to write reports
  • Creative and innovative thinker

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • GIS skills
  • Have an understanding of sustainable finance
  • Has the ability to train the community, government and partners.
  • Have management skills
  • Certified diver
  • Ability to represent the Raja Ampat program effectively in negotiation situations
  • Project management and/or development experience in the field

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • This position will be based in Raja Ampat, with frequent travel to MPA field sites and occasional travel to Sorong and Jakarta.
  • Flexibility to work outside normal work hours and an irregular schedule including weekends or holidays.
