The Wildlife Conservation Society’s (WCS’s) Indonesia program aims to conserve marine resources vital to the protection and sustainability of a wide range of human activities and livelihoods. Consequently, conservation efforts cannot be separated from the management of fisheries or interaction with coastal communities. WCS employs a rigorous science-based approach to build capacity, strengthen management and inspire community stewardship for the protection and sustainable use of critical marine ecosystems, fisheries and threatened species. To achieve these goals, WCS is assisting the Indonesian government to establish and manage marine protected areas (MPAs), manage marine national parks, manage small-scale fisheries, and protect Endangered, Threatened and Protected marine species in Aceh, North Sulawesi, West Nusa Tenggara, and North Maluku, plus several other sites.
The WCS Indonesia Marine Program focuses on the establishment and effective management of MPAs and development of sustainable fisheries, as interlinked strategies to secure and manage Indonesia’s coastal marine resources. WCS is committed to assisting the Government of Indonesia to meet its national and international commitments to MPA establishment and management – including a commitment to create a total of 32.5 million hectares of MPAs by 2030. MPAs benefit both biodiversity and fisheries management by protecting habitats and protecting breeding populations of important marine organisms.
The basis of our work is scientific data. Our teams of marine biologists, fisheries scientists, and socio-economists inform project design with baseline surveys. Regular and robust monitoring and evaluation of project performance informs our strategic planning and formulation of future management interventions for WCS and provincial partners.
MARINE NATIONAL PARKS COORDINATORS
The Marine National Parks Coordinator will lead the implementation of the WCS Marine Program’s work in Wakatobi National Park. The position will focus on strengthening and improving MPA management effectiveness, small-scale fisheries management, and sustainable tourism management. The Coordinator will report to the National Park Senior Coordinator and interact significantly with the Marine Conservation Senior Coordinator, Marine Science Unit Manager and other Coordinator, Specialist and Officer. Other responsibilities include developing and maintaining excellent relationships with National Park Authorities, NGO partners, universities partners, local community groups, and private sector partners on the ground.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Program and project management:
- Support National Park Senior Coordinator to design and coordinate the implementation and administration of all projects to deliver approved work plan and activities in a timely manner in line with budgets in Wakatobi.
- Develop, review (reports, presentation, other publication) required in communicating project implementation to donors or other partners as necessary.
- Develop, coordinate and monitors schedule of donor reporting, ensure quality of reports and its submission in timely manner.
- Develop document of lessons learned from project implementation and develop briefing notes for the Program Managers to improve implementation and coordination of project activities, support decision-making processes and knowledge management.
- Working together with Knowledge Management team, to deliver regular updates on the project activities, including news flashes and updates for WCS-IP website and other social media postings, annual report, and articles for brochures, leaflets, and printing media when required.
- Develop research design, conduct survey, data entry, analysis and reporting to meet the WCS standard and format.
Technical:
- Working closely with national parks authorities and others key stakeholders to improve management effectiveness of national parks including facilitating the review of zoning systems and management plans for these national parks.
- Develop an understanding, review, and implement sustainable tourism management plans of action, fisheries control rules, and improved wastewater management alongside the Marine Science Unit.
- Develop communication strategies in partnership with the Communications Team, when appropriate, to support National Parks projects and their objectives.
Reports and Deliverables:
The employee will provide the National Park Senior Coordinator with the following material on the following schedule:
- Daily activity reports (verbal).
- Monthly activity reports.
- Quarterly activity reports.
- Annual team and personal work plan.
- Semi-annually and annual general activity reports.
General:
- Participate wholeheartedly in the general activities of WCS-IP particularly events and activities that require the full support and participation of all staff members, whether the focus of any event or activity has any bearing on the job description and assigned project objectives and activities.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Having at least 5 years’ experience in monitoring, evaluation program, MPA and Fisheries management, having experiences working in South Sulawesi will be an advantage.
- Bachelor’s degree in marine science and fisheries.
- An ability to communicate with a broad range of people and find solutions to problems.
- Good interpersonal skills to deal with a diverse group of contacts (including local stakeholders and communities), and ability to be a team player.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in both Indonesian and English.
- Aptitude in using Microsoft Excel and Word with additional skill in database management is advantage.
- Priorities to Wakatobi – Southeast Sulawesi residence.
