ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE FOUNDATION JOB VACANCIES 2024
Indonesia Net Free Seas Project Officer
The Environmental Justice Foundation (EJF) exists to protect the natural world and defend our basic human right to a secure environment.
EJF works internationally to inform policy and drive systemic, durable reforms to protect our environment and defend human rights. We investigate and expose abuses and support environmental defenders, Indigenous peoples, communities, and independent journalists on the frontlines of environmental injustice. Our campaigns aim to secure peaceful, equitable and sustainable futures.
Our investigators, researchers, filmmakers, and campaigners work with grassroots partners and environmental defenders across the globe.
Our work to secure environmental justice aims to protect our global climate, ocean, forests, and wildlife and defend fundamental human rights.
EJF has worked in Indonesia since 2018 to end illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing and human rights abuses on fishing vessels, build journalist capacity to report on environmental crimes, and actively promote improvements to policy making, corporate governance and management of fisheries.
The Net Free Seas (NFS) project was first launched in Thailand in 2020. It aims to stop the flow of abandoned, lost, discarded fishing gear (ALDFG) into our oceans whilst empowering local communities to feel that they are part of the recycling solution by giving them the tools to collect and clean the nets themselves. The NFS project has been launched in Indonesia since 2022.
EJF is seeking a Net Free Seas Project Officer to join the team and help scale the NFS project across Indonesia. This position will include engaging with local fishing communities, recycling companies, and Indonesian government agencies to deliver key project objectives including researching fishing communities to become part of the project, engaging with community members and local leaders to facilitate understanding and participation, as well as coordinating the retrieval and subsequent collection of discarded/waste fishing nets.
Successful candidates should be comfortable working independently and be confident in public speaking and community engagement. They will be adept at conducting related project tasks both fieldwork and remote online work, and should be adept at using online Google Workspace platform. They should also have access to a vehicle and be prepared to travel within Indonesia.
