BACKGROUND

The Interfaith Rainforest Initiative (IRI) is a global, multi-faith alliance that brings moral urgency and faith-based leadership to the effort to end tropical deforestation. IRI serves as a platform for religious leaders to work in close partnership with Indigenous Peoples, government, civil society, and the private sector to protect rainforests and uphold the rights of forest guardians.

IRI operates country programs in Brazil, Colombia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Indonesia, and Peru focused on education and awareness raising, training, on-the-ground mobilization, public outreach engagement campaigns, strategic communications and policy advocacy.

IRI Indonesia was officially launched in 2020 and is entering a new phase aimed at strengthening partnerships, scaling its impact, and positioning faith-based leadership as a force for rainforest protection and the rights of Indigenous Peoples in Indonesia.

POSITION SUMMARY

The National Facilitator will serve as the senior-most leader of IRI Indonesia and be responsible for the overall strategic direction, coordination, and implementation of the national program. This includes leading a multi-faith and multi-stakeholder partnership, overseeing the program secretariat, strengthening partnerships across sectors (particularly amongst the Religious Councils of the country), ensuring effective delivery of national and provincial activities, and representing IRI Indonesia at the highest levels.

This is an executive leadership role that requires a dynamic, visionary, and diplomatic leader with strong personal commitment and demonstrated experience in environmental advocacy, interfaith dialogue and engagement, work with Indigenous Peoples, and coalition-building. The National Facilitator will lead the IRI Indonesia team and program office located at EcoNusa Foundation, the host organization of the partnership, and will work closely with the IRI Indonesia Advisory Council and the IRI global secretariat team.  The position is based in Jakarta, Indonesia.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategic Leadership and Program Management

  • Lead the development and execution of an ambitious annual strategy and work plan for IRI Indonesia, ensuring alignment with global IRI objectives and national priorities on rainforest protection and the rights of Indigenous Peoples.
  • Guide and supervise a core team and program partners, including through joint planning, coordination, and monitoring frameworks.
  • Manage the program’s operational calendar, budgets, reporting, and performance against deliverables.

Governance and Coordination

  • Convene, coordinate, and support the IRI Indonesia Advisory Council, composed of representatives from major Religious Councils, AMAN, United Nations agencies, NGOs, and other key stakeholders.
  • Ensure inclusive, transparent decision-making processes and uphold the principles of shared leadership and collaboration.

Partnership and Stakeholder Engagement

  • Build and maintain high-trust partnerships with Religious Councils, AMAN, civil society organizations, academic institutions, UN agencies, science and research institutes, and relevant government bodies.
  • Facilitate consultations, working groups, and joint initiatives that support joint advocacy, training, and campaign efforts.
  • Represent IRI Indonesia in national and international fora, and maintain regular engagement with the IRI global secretariat and other IRI country programs in Brazil, Colombia, DRC and Peru.
  • Launch and manage IRI Indonesia chapters in priority provinces of the country, creating action coalitions of religious leaders, Indigenous Peoples, civil society and other sectors focused on outreach, education and advocacy

Faith-based Mobilization and Training

  • Expand and energize a network of religious leaders, institutions, and networks committed to rainforest protection and the rights of Indigenous Peoples.
  • Develop educational tools, teaching guides, spiritual resources, and training programs tailored to Indonesia’s major faith traditions.
  • Manage partnerships with the country’s leading science and research institutes to host regular scientific immersion trainings for senior religious leaders, communicators and influencers from different faiths.

Campaigns

  • Coordinate national communications and public awareness campaigns to shift public opinion and galvanize action.
  • Facilitate the development of strategic communications content, channels and networks that widely disseminate faith-based messages around the moral and spiritual imperative of protecting and restoring rainforests
  • Coordinate multi-channel outreach efforts through radio, TV, billboards, digital, print targeting religious audiences with tailored moral, spiritual, and scientific messages.

Policy Advocacy

  • Design and implement policy advocacy strategies that position faith-based leadership to influence public discourse, legislation, and enforcement of rainforest protection and the rights of Indigenous Peoples.
  • Facilitate legislative campaigns, position papers and policy interventions on rainforest protection and the rights of Indigenous Peoples
  • Coordinate and facilitate public debates with candidates for office on rainforest protection and the rights of Indigenous Peoples
  • Hold policy dialogues and meetings with relevant Ministries, mayors, parliamentarians and other public authorities to discuss strengthening policies that protect rainforests and the rights of Indigenous Peoples.
  • Coordinate open letters, hearings and strategic alliances that bring the moral voice of religious leaders and organizations to decision-makers

Monitoring and Learning

  • Develop monitoring, evaluation, and learning systems to assess the impact of IRI Indonesia activities and continuously strengthen program effectiveness.
  • Contribute to global learning processes and knowledge exchange among IRI countries and partners.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum 10 years of progressively responsible experience in program leadership, preferably in the fields of environment, climate change, or sustainable development.
  • Master’s degree in a relevant field, or equivalent work experience.
  • Strong personal commitment to rainforest protection and the promotion of human rights.
  • Proven experience managing partnerships across sectors, including faith-based organizations, Indigenous Peoples, NGOs, UN agencies, and government institutions.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead complex programs and multi-stakeholder platforms with strategic vision, diplomacy, and collaborative leadership.
  • Strong experience in mobilization and movement building, including convening high-level events and facilitating cross-sectoral collaboration.
  • Deep understanding of religious institutions, interfaith collaboration, and spiritual frameworks in the Indonesian context.
  • Excellent organizational and facilitation skills, with the ability to communicate effectively across cultures, institutions, and sectors.
  • Fluent in Bahasa Indonesia and strong proficiency in written and spoken English.
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally as needed. 

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience working with Indigenous Peoples and forest communities.
  • Background in rainforest conservation, rights-based advocacy, or sustainable development in Indonesia.
  • Experience in advocacy targeting policy and private sector change.
  • Experience developing educational materials and faith-based outreach resources.
