We partner with local stakeholders to implement landscape-level conservation strategies based on rigorous scientific studies, and support communities to develop sustainable livelihoods that complement environmental protection, and creating youth generations who care with environment.
Position Description
Borneo Nature Foundation (BNF) is looking for a new Communications Manager to implement, develop, and oversee BNF’s Communications Programme. The successful candidate will lead and manage a team of experienced communications specialists (Digital Communications Officer, Content Creator, Graphic Designer, and Public Relations) to promote organisation’s mission and engage external audiences in BNF’s conservation efforts through a variety of media in Indonesia (including, but not exclusive to digital communications, press, publications and events). The Communications Manager is responsible for preparing the communications strategy and annual workplan, promoting consistent conservation messages, producing compelling stories, and BNF’s visual identity and branding guidelines. He/she will be expected to familiarize themselves with the full spectrum of BNF programmse and understand internal communications across the entire organization to enable them to fulfill their duties. The Communications Manager is expected to build and maintain a vibrant network of journalists in Indonesia, write and distribute press releases, handle media enquiries, organize press conferences, and arrange interviews with BNF employees and partners.
We are looking for a creative, versatile and motivated person who can bring new ideas and strategies to our current Communications Programme. The Communications Manager will be encouraged to seek opportunities to expand our audiences and increase the impact of our communications outreach to strengthen support for BNF.
The successful candidate must be able to manage a flexible, productive work schedule, coordinate multiple tasks and competing priorities, and manage themselves and the Communications Team effectively to meet deadlines. The Communications Manager needs to have good social skills and be outgoing and confident. It is extremely beneficial for the candidate to have prior experience of working in Central Kalimantan and an understanding of key stakeholders within the conservation sector.
Key Task and Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, monitor and evaluate an effective communications strategy, including annual SWOT analysis, objectives, work plan and budgets;
- In coordination with Board of Directors in Indonesia and International to develop a country level communications strategy, defining key objectives, target audiences and tactics;
- Supervision and management of BNF’s Communications Team, including planning the team’s schedule, and organising and leading team and individual staff meetings;
- Writing and implementing BNF’s communications policies (e.g. social media, media and press, photography and film);
- Representing BNF at external meetings with partners and stakeholders to support the delivery of communication outputs in line with partnership agreements and MOUs;
- Coordinating and fulfilling requests from BNF International to support the implementation of BNF’s Global Outreach Strategy;
- Reviewing all communication outputs to ensure that consistent, high quality and clear conservation messages are shared, and outputs confirm to BNF branding and visual identity;
- Responsible the management of BNF Indonesia’s social media and website content, and other communication outputs;
- Responsible for press and media relations in Indonesia, including writing and distributing press releases, dealing with media requests and enquiries, and enhancing BNF’s network of journalists both locally and nationally;
- Coordinating with visiting journalist, photographer, or filmmakers to provide support and ensure they are meeting the needs of BNF and working within BNF’s policies and agreements;
- Creating and running campaigns and events focusing on wildlife and conservation issues in Central Kalimantan with the aim of acquiring further support for BNF and its programmes;
- Ensure communication outputs matches donors’ need and requirements, and BNF’s online platforms are supporting the organisation’s fundraising strategies;
- Ensure communications outputs in line with Indonesia’s government regulations;
- Writing programme update reports and participating in internal meetings to represent the Communications Programme;
- Providing training and capacity building opportunities for the Communications Team and other BNF staff to improve the team’s skills in communications (e.g writing, photography, social media) to help enhance BNF’s outreach efforts.
- Carry out any other reasonable duties which are consistent with the aims and objectives of the position.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in communications, public relations, marketing, or related field, preferably Science Communications;
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience working in the field of communications, preferably with a conservation NGO in Indonesia;
- Experience in management and supervision of a team;
- Strong leadership skills and ability to motive and enthuse staff to increase engagement and contributions to BNF’s communication outputs;
- Experience in writing, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating a communications strategy for an NGO or charity;
- Significant experience across a broad range of communication channels;
- Excellent written and verbal communication, research and proofreading skills, and attention to details;
- Experience of creating and running campaigns, which include social media, press, TV, radio, events and public relations, that has led to increased engagement;
- Experience of developing positive and ongoing relationships with the press and media;
- Excellent computing skills, plus experience in website development and management, and use of online communications technology, including social media;
- Photography, filming and photo/film editing experience/knowledge;
- Fluent in spoken and written English is essential;
- Strong interest and commitment to wildlife conservation, and BNF’s vision and mission.
