AktivAsia are activist educators and facilitators passionate about activist learning who facilitate training, education, research and organising to catalyse powerful people movements. Based in Indonesia – AktivAsia seeks to appoint an
INDONESIA COUNTRY LEAD
AktivAsia is expanding its network of locally led climate movement training programs across Asia, focusing on building strategic capacity for energy transitions. With a well-established presence in four countries, including a robust program in Indonesia, AktivAsia seeks a Country Lead to strengthen this flagship initiative. This leadership role involves enhancing training and education structures, fostering relationships with local partners, and recruiting more educators and coaches. The Indonesia Country Lead will also build a community of practice to support grassroots campaigns. Key responsibilities include mentoring, coaching, and training in campaign strategy, thereby reinforcing social movement infrastructures for a just energy transition.
The Country Lead will be responsible for the following tasks and duties, among others:
Country direction setting
- Own the creation and implementation of country strategy and create accountability and feedback mechanisms that enable the country team to work towards achieving strategic objectives.
- Ensure that the organization’s vision, mission, and values are aligned with the local context and needs.
- Build structures and processes within the country that enable the creation of a high performing team.
- Direct regular online and in-person training and education opportunities (in campaign strategy, community organising, strategic communications, public narrative and leadership) for people impacted by injustice in Indonesia and regionally (East, South and Southeast Asia).
- Drive increased economic and cultural viability of national training and education programs in local languages – co-designed and co-owned by local people.
Leadership and governance
- Be a key contributor to the leadership group at AktivAsia, operationalising internal accountability and support mechanisms.
- Drive the AktivAsia training pathways in country – build a team that works seamlessly and enables achievement of the AktivAsia country goals.
- Lead the entire process of updating the business plan and organization strategy for the Indonesia program and work collaboratively with the AA team in the implementation phase.
- Represent AktivAsia and with stakeholders.
Fundraising and donor engagement
- Drive networking and collaboration across social movements, campaign organizations, and funders at a country level.
- Liaison with funders, philanthropists and other stakeholders.
- Drive financial sustainability goals within the country team.
Management and Oversight
Manage the staff, budget, programs, and partnerships.
The Country Lead must meet the following criteria:
Qualifications and Experience
Required:
- +5 years experience as a campaigner / organiser, with a strong background in social justice issues.
- +5 years of proven experience as trainer/ facilitator (advanced facilitation skills).
- Have a deep understanding of and connection to the climate movement ecosystem in Indonesia.
- Have a deep understanding of Indonesia, including its culture, politics, economy, and social issues.
- Demonstrated experience in project management and reporting including setting clear and realistic goals and expectations and timely delivery of milestones.
- Demonstrated experience in implementing MEL Plan, including regular monitoring and evaluating your progress and performance.
- Demonstrated experience in building and managing a strong and diverse team that share your vision and values.
- Demonstrated ability to be able to work under pressure, adapt to changing situations, and handle conflicts and crises.
Desirable:
- Familiarity with the campaign strategy and organising frameworks we teach.
- Experience working in coalitions.
- Demonstrated commitment to the practice of leadership.
- Strategic understanding of the climate movement ecosystem and how we win/ build power.
- Demonstrated experience in writing grant proposals and successfully securing grants.
