Conservation Outreach and Ecotourism Officer

Saleh Bay, located in West Nusa Tenggara, is a critical habitat for the Indo-Pacific whale shark population. The area is known for frequent sightings of juvenile whale sharks, making it an important feeding and nursery ground. However, the growing popularity of whale shark tourism, combined with potential environmental threats such as overfishing, pollution, and habitat degradation, poses challenges to the long-term conservation of these majestic creatures. Recognizing the importance of preserving this unique marine ecosystem, Konservasi Indonesia is seeking a qualified and self-motivated individual as Conservation Outreach and Ecotourism Officer. This position will be responsible for supporting the implementation of the Saleh Bay Whale Shark-Based MPA program with a focus on community engagement, outreach, and the development of sustainable whale shark ecotourism initiatives. The officer will act as a key liaison with local communities, tourism operators, tourist and government agencies such as the Department of Marine and Fisheries and the Department of Tourism to strengthen collaboration and ensure inclusive participation in whale shark ecotourism efforts.

The officer will coordinate outreach and education activities, promote responsible whale shark tourism practices, and facilitate the involvement of local communities in ecotourism value chains. The officer will also support capacity building of local youth groups, community members, and tourism stakeholders to enhance awareness, skills, and ownership of conservation initiatives in Saleh Bay. The officer will report directly to the Saleh Bay Program Senior Coordinator.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support the implementation of outreach, awareness, and education programs for local communities, schools, tourism actors, and youth groups in Saleh Bay.
  • Manage the program and operational of whale shark learning center.
  • Act as a liaison with local tourism operators, guides, and associations to promote and implement responsible whale shark tourism practices.
  • Support the development of community livelihoods linked to whale shark ecotourism, ensuring equitable participation and benefit-sharing within Sumbawa and Dompu Regencies.
  • Assist in the design and delivery of training programs to build the capacity of community members and tourism stakeholders in conservation and ecotourism.
  • Contribute to the preparation of outreach materials, communication products, and publicity activities, including articles, brochures, exhibitions, and scientific publications.
  • Support program monitoring and evaluation (M&E) by assisting in data collection, reporting, and documentation of outreach and ecotourism activities.
  • Facilitate and participate in meetings, workshops, and public consultations with government agencies, local stakeholders, and partners.
  • Perform other duties as requested by the Supervisor to support Konservasi Indonesia’s Ocean and Sunda Banda Ecoregion portfolio.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree (S1) in a relevant field such as marine science, fisheries, tourism, environmental studies, social development, or other related disciplines.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in community development and conservation related to coastal and small island communities.
  • Knowledge of tourism practices, particularly related to whale shark and ecotourism.
  • Strong facilitation skills to conduct community-level meetings, focus group discussions, and multi-stakeholder engagements.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with proven ability to work collaboratively in a team and build trust with diverse stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in computer skills (MS Office: Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and internet-based communication tools.
  • Strong language skills (oral and written) in Bahasa Indonesia and English.
  • Previous work experience in a multi-cultural and cross-sector environment is preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability in critical thinking, situational analysis, and adaptive problem-solving to support strategy development in Saleh Bay.

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

List additional required or preferred qualifications specific to the position

  • Able to maintain good relationships between KI and local villagers, tourism actors, and goverment agencies
  • Experience working with communities and organizations.
  • Understand gender dimensions is highly desirable.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Based in Sumbawa and will involve frequent travel to coastal villages in Saleh Bay and other relevant places.
  • Flexibility to work outside normal work hours to meet deadlines as needed.
