TAY JUHANA FOUNDATION JOB VACANCIES 2025
In a world where over seven billion people live, nearly one billion go hungry every night. Access to food, a fundamental human right, is frequently neglected. With challenges like climate change, water scarcity, and complex land management, the urgency for food security has never been greater. The Tay Juhana Foundation (TJF) is dedicated to tackling these issues. Our team of committed professionals is focused on advancing sustainable agricultural practices across the suboptimal lands that constitute two-thirds of Indonesia’s surface area. This suboptimal land, integral to local agricultural traditions, holds untapped potential for food production.
Suboptimal land, which includes areas with poor soil, limited water, or extreme weather, can be challenging for food production. However, sustainable agricultural practices offer a way to use these lands effectively for future food needs. Our communication efforts focus on raising awareness and inspiring action by showcasing how sustainability-driven approaches can turn suboptimal land into a key solution for global food challenges.
We are seeking a passionate and field-ready Field Officer (Plant Pest and Disease) to join our team. In this position, you will be responsible for conducting pest and disease research on horticultural and agricultural crops, particularly within the coconut ecosystem. This research is part of TJF’s broader agenda to strengthen food system sustainability and resilience in suboptimal environments. Join us in building a future where nutritious and sustainable food is accessible to all.
ROLE DESCRIPTION
The Field Officer (Plant Pest and Disease) plays a crucial role in supporting TJF’s integrated research on food systems and climate-resilient agriculture. This role focuses on identifying, studying, and managing plant pests and diseases affecting horticultural crops—especially coconuts—in wetland and suboptimal land conditions.
You will be responsible for conducting rigorous field-based research to understand pest and disease dynamics, exploring questions such as:
What are the most common pest and disease threats in coconut plantations?
How do local environmental factors influence their spread and severity?
What low-impact, scalable methods can be developed to manage them effectively?
This work will contribute to TJF’s goal of strengthening community-based knowledge systems while supporting farmers, researchers, and policymakers in adapting to climate and ecological challenges.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Conduct detailed field assessments of pests and diseases affecting agricultural and horticultural crops, with an emphasis on coconut-based farming systems.
Collect, document, and analyze ecological and environmental data related to pest and disease outbreaks.
Develop and recommend integrated pest and disease management (IPM) strategies tailored to suboptimal land conditions.
Support capacity-building efforts through workshops, field demonstrations, and written knowledge products.
Collaborate with academic institutions, local farming communities, and government stakeholders to scale research findings into practice.
Contribute to TJF’s reports, technical briefs, and outreach efforts related to food systems and agricultural sustainability.
Qualification
COMPULSORY REQUIREMENTS
Fluency in both written and spoken English.
A Bachelor’s degree in plant protection, entomology, plant pathology, agronomy, or related fields from an accredited institution.
Minimum of two years’ experience conducting field research in pest and disease management, preferably in agricultural or horticultural settings.
COMPETENCIES
Strong understanding of plant health management in tropical ecosystems.
Demonstrated ability to conduct field-based research and apply findings to practical, farmer-oriented solutions.
Familiarity with food security issues and agricultural practices in Indonesia, particularly on suboptimal land.
Capacity to work independently and in interdisciplinary teams, often in remote or rural settings.
Excellent interpersonal and cross-cultural communication skills, especially with smallholder farmers and local stakeholders.
Organized, proactive, and able to meet deadlines under limited supervision.
