AJAR (Asia Justice and Rights) is seeking an experienced and committed Deputy Director to provide leadership and oversight in support of AJAR’s programs, partnerships and ongoing sustainability. The position is based in Jakarta, Indonesia.
Working closely with the Executive Director, the Deputy Director will be responsible for strengthening organizational systems, accountability mechanisms, human resource development, fundraising coordination, policy implementation and organizational performance. The Deputy Director will serve as the primary focal point for organizational development and cross-program coordination, ensuring that AJAR’s structures, processes and support functions effectively support high-quality program delivery. The position will have overall responsibility for grants management, communications, data management and office support, and will play a key role in strengthening AJAR’s organizational resilience and sustainability.
Leadership and Organizational Development
- Support the Executive Director in implementing AJAR’s strategic priorities and plans.
- Lead organizational development initiatives that strengthen effectiveness, sustainability and coordination.
- Monitor organizational performance and identify areas requiring improvement, adjustment or investment.
- Ensure organizational priorities are translated into practical systems, plans and actions.
- Strengthen coordination and collaboration across AJAR’s programs and teams
Systems, Policies and Accountability
- Oversee the implementation and periodic review of organizational policies, procedures and systems.
- Oversee planning, monitoring, reporting and performance review processes.
- Support risk management, compliance and accountability mechanisms.
- Ensure that Yayasan Asia Justice and Rights meets relevant legal, regulatory, governance and reporting requirements in Indonesia, working closely with the Executive Director, Board and relevant staff and advisers.
- Serve as the focal point for cross-program coordination and ensure effective information-sharing and collaboration across teams.
- Strengthen systems that enable program teams to deliver high-quality, accountable and sustainable work.
Human Resources and Organizational Culture
- Lead and support staff development, performance, wellbeing and safeguarding.
- Support recruitment and selection, onboarding and staff retention processes.
- Promote a collaborative, inclusive and learning-oriented organizational culture.
- Ensure AJAR’s organizational values are reflected in its practices, systems and workplace relationships.
- Support the development of staff leadership and capacity across the organization.
Fundraising, Partnerships and Sustainability
- Support the development and implementation of fundraising strategies and lead resource mobilization efforts in collaboration with program teams.
- Cultivate strategic relationships with donors, partners and institutional stakeholders.
- Support and coordinate proposal development and donor engagement.
- Monitor funding trends and emerging opportunities and contribute to AJAR’s long-term financial and organizational sustainability.
- Explore new, alternative and creative fundraising opportunities alongside traditional bilateral and multilateral funding sources.
Representation and External Relations
- Represent AJAR in meetings, events and other national, regional and international fora, as delegated by the Executive Director.
- Strengthen relationships with donors, civil society partners, government agencies and other key stakeholders.
- Contribute to advocacy, networking and other efforts that advance AJAR’s mission and strategic objectives.
- Support AJAR’s external communications and institutional profile.
Qualifications and Experience
The successful candidate will demonstrate the following essential qualifications, experience and qualities:
- An advanced degree in a relevant field, or at least ten years of experience managing complex human rights or social development programs.
- Excellent understanding of human rights and their application in diverse contexts and situations.
- In-depth understanding of gender dynamics and the importance of integrating a gender perspective into program design, implementation and evaluation.
- Strong representation skills, with a proven ability to engage meaningfully with donors, senior government officials, civil society leaders and other key stakeholders, and to represent an organization in national, regional and international fora.
- Well-developed fundraising skills, including experience responding to traditional bilateral and multilateral requests for proposals, as well as exploring new, alternative and creative fundraising opportunities, including individual and corporate giving.
- A solid understanding of program, human resource and financial management, with a proven track record of delivering high-quality and impactful outcomes and results.
- The ability to think strategically and to anticipate and respond to emerging developments, challenges and opportunities in a rapidly changing world.
- Strong interpersonal and leadership skills, with the ability to work collaboratively across diverse teams and contexts.
- Excellent spoken and written English and well-developed communication and presentation skills.
Recruitment, Appointment and Remuneration
AJAR staff and Board will be represented in the recruitment and selection process for the Deputy Director. In line with AJAR’s employment practices, the successful candidate will initially be offered a one-year contract, renewable subject to satisfactory performance. The position will include a three-month probation period prior to confirmation in the role.
Remuneration: IDR 27–30 million per month, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
