Designation: Commercial Manager

Location: Asia Pacific (Home-based with regional and international travel)

Background: Fairtrade Network of Asia and Pacific Producers (NAPP)

Fairtrade Network of Asia and Pacific Producers (NAPP) is a regional network of Fairtrade certified producer organizations across Asia and the Pacific. FTNAPP is registered in Singapore as a non-profit entity and forms part of the global Fairtrade system. FTNAPP currently represents more than 277 producer organizations across 20 countries, supporting over 260,000 farmers and workers producing coffee, cocoa, tea, sugar, rice, spices, and other agricultural commodities. The organization works to strengthen producer organizations, facilitate market access, and build ethical supply chains that deliver fair trading conditions and sustainable livelihoods for farmers and workers.

To further strengthen market linkages and expand commercial opportunities for Fairtrade producers, FTNAPP is seeking a Commercial Manager to support market development, commercial partnerships, and supply chain coordination across priority markets.

Deliverables

Commercial and Income Generation Strategy Implementation

Support the execution of NAPP’s regional commercial strategy focused on expanding market opportunities for Fairtrade producers.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Implement NAPP’s Route to Market strategy across priority markets and products.
  • Map supply chains and trade flows between producer organizations and international markets.
  • Identify emerging opportunities for Fairtrade products across key commodities.
  • Support the development of market entry strategies in new geographic markets.
  • Facilitate pilot initiatives for new product categories or niche market segments.
  • Deliver agreed income targets through: Producer/Trader paid services
    • commissions from managed supply chains
    • paid market-readiness and sourcing services
    • Other possible streams of income opportunities
    • Monitor performance and adapt plans based on results and market conditions
Expected results
  • New commercial opportunities identified and developed.
  • Increased trade flows between producer organizations and buyers.
  • Diversification of product portfolios and market channels.
  • Income stream from paid services

Market Development and Commercial Partnerships

Strengthen partnerships with commercial actors across supply chains. Key responsibilities include:

  • Identify and develop relationships with traders, distributors, processors, brands, and retailers.
  • Facilitate engagement between producer organizations and potential buyers.
  • Support negotiations and partnership development for new trade opportunities.
  • Maintain regular engagement with National Fairtrade Organizations (NFOs) and Fairtrade Marketing Organizations (FMOs).
  • Facilitate alignment between producer supply and market demand.
Expected results
  • Expanded network of commercial partners.
  • Increased number of Fairtrade licensees sourcing from Asia Pacific.
  • Strengthened producer access to global markets.

Licensing and Market Expansion

Support the development and expansion of Fairtrade licensing in priority markets. Key responsibilities include:

  • Support Identifying potential licensees for Fairtrade products across Asia Pacific and emerging markets.
  • Support engagement with brands interested in sourcing Fairtrade products.
  • Contribute to the development of licensing models suitable for regional markets.
  • Support Coordination with Fairtrade International and FMO India regarding licensing arrangements and commercial flows.
  • Support Maintenance a pipeline of potential licensees and commercial partners.
Expected results
  • Growth in licensing partnerships.
  • Increased commercial visibility of Fairtrade products from Asia Pacific.
  • FMO SEA established

Supply Chain and Trade Flow Development

Strengthen coordination between producer organizations and market actors. Key responsibilities include:

  • Map product flows from producer organizations to international markets.
  • Identify supply chain bottlenecks and opportunities for efficiency improvements.
  • Support producer organizations in understanding market requirements including quality, traceability, and compliance.
  • Coordinate with Producer Services teams to strengthen producer readiness for markets.

  • Improved efficiency in supply chains.
  • Increased competitiveness of producer organizations in international markets.

Market Intelligence and Commercial Analysis

  • Provide market insights to guide strategic decisions. Key responsibilities include:
  • Track global market trends for priority commodities.
  • Monitor competitor certifications and sustainability schemes.
  • Identify emerging consumer and market trends related to sustainability and ethical sourcing.
  • Provide regular commercial insights to NAPP management and internal teams.
Expected results
  • Better market intelligence for strategic decision making.
  • Identification of emerging commercial opportunities.
Brand Promotion and Market Visibility
  • Support initiatives that increase the visibility of Fairtrade products and producer organizations. Key responsibilities include:
  • Represent NAPP at trade fairs, industry events, and sustainability platforms.
  • Promote Fairtrade supply chains to commercial partners and buyers.
  • Work with communications teams to develop promotional materials highlighting producer impact.
  • Support campaigns that promote ethical sourcing and Fairtrade products.
Expected results
  • Increased awareness of Fairtrade products from Asia Pacific.
  • Stronger positioning of NAPP within sustainability and ethical trade networks.

Monitoring, Reporting, and Performance Tracking

Track commercial performance and ensure accountability. Key responsibilities include:

  • Monitor commercial indicators including:
    • trade volumes facilitated
    • commercial partnerships established
    • licensees engaged
    • market opportunities developed
  • Maintain a commercial opportunity pipeline.
  • Prepare regular progress reports for management and governance structures.
Required Qualifications & Experience
  • Master’s degree in business administration, International Trade, Agricultural Economics, or related discipline.
  • Minimum 5 to 10 years of experience in commercial development, Agri-trade, FMCG sales, or sustainable value chains.
  • Strong experience working with international agricultural supply chains.
  • Experience engaging with buyers, traders, and global brands.
  • Knowledge of sustainability certification systems or ethical sourcing models is highly desirable.
  • Strong negotiation, partnership building, and communication skills.
  • Experience working in multi-country environments and multicultural teams.
