Saleh Bay Senior Coordinator

Saleh Bay, located in West Nusa Tenggara, is a critical habitat for the Indo-Pacific whale shark population. The area is known for frequent sightings of juvenile whale sharks, making it an important feeding and nursery ground. However, the growing popularity of whale shark tourism, combined with potential environmental threats such as overfishing, pollution, and habitat degradation, poses challenges to the long-term conservation of these majestic creatures. Recognizing the importance of preserving this unique marine ecosystem, Konservasi Indonesia is seeking a qualified and passionate candidate as Saleh Bay Senior Coordinator. This position will be responsible for coordinating the overall implementation of the Saleh Bay Whale Shark-Based MPA program, including conservation and ecotourism initiatives. This position will serve as the main liaison with key stakeholders in West Nusa Tenggara, such as the Department of Marine and Fisheries and the Department of Tourism and ensure smooth communication and collaboration among partners.
The Senior coordinator will oversee technical, administrative, financial, and programmatic aspects of project implementation to ensure timely and high-quality delivery according to the workplan and budget. The role will also be responsible for managing field staff, ensuring effective teamwork, and building local capacity to support program objectives. The senior coordinator will report directly to the Conservation Planning Manager and work closely with the Focal Species Conservation Program to align activities with broader whale shark conservation strategies.
In addition, the senior coordinator will support the comprehensive management of Saleh Bay through a ridge to reef approach, ensuring that marine conservation efforts are integrated with watershed, coastal, and community-based management to secure long-term ecological resilience and sustainable benefits for local communities.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Managing the overall program implementation, field staff, and budget based on the approved workplan.
- Apply critical thinking and situational analysis to anticipate challenges, read local dynamics, and develop adaptive strategies that enhance the long-term conservation and sustainable development goals in Saleh Bay.
- Act as the primary liaison with the Department of Marine and Fisheries of West Nusa Tenggara Province, including the MPA management body, to support the development and implementation of whale shark-based MPA, conservation, and ecotourism initiatives in Saleh Bay.
- Accompany and support the Badan Layanan Umum Daerah Saleh Bay MPA to strengthen its institutional capacity, enabling it to operate independently and improve service delivery in the management of the MPA.
- Coordinate engagement with province and regency stakeholders in the tourism, agriculture, aquaculture, environment, education, and youth sectors to promote a holistic and integrated approach to whale shark and ecosystem conservation in Saleh Bay.
- Coordinate management and policy development processes related to whale shark conservation and MPA governance.
- Supervise and mentor field staff to ensure effective implementation of activities, capacity development, and knowledge transfer.
- Support data collection, review, monitoring & evaluation (M&E), and preliminary research to inform project decision-making.
- Prepare activity and financial reports, draft technical and donor reports, develop presentations, and support communication products for partners and donors.
- Promote and implement ridge to reef approaches that integrate terrestrial and marine ecosystem management in support of comprehensive Saleh Bay governance.
- Provide inputs for program design and development in Saleh Bay, and perform other duties as requested by the Supervisor to support Konservasi Indonesia’s Ocean program and Sunda Banda Ecoregion portfolio.
PEOPLE AND RESOURCE MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES
- This position will manage and mentor field staff to ensure effective implementation of the Saleh Bay Program.
- Act as point to contact to represent KI effectively and responsibly at governmental and stakeholder meeting.
- Does not have authority to allocate resources or approve budget expenditures, but he/she will support tracks and monitors expenditures. Initiates check requests or similar routine transactions within established guidelines.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent university degree in biology, marine science, or natural resource management.
- 10 years of related work experience, preferably in conservation NGO.
- Good command of spoken and writing English and Bahasa. Good attention to detail and proofreading and research skills.
- Comfortable managing multiple duties and adapting to changing priorities.
- Service focus. courteous, tactful, and proven ability to work effectively with others.
- Ability to work under tight deadlines and often under difficult circumstances.
- Ability to function well in a multicultural, diverse, and fast-paced work team environment.
- Ability to work under general supervision and take initiative to solve problems under supervisor direction.
- Computer literacy in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, email and internet applications
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Work is performed in a typical office environment which requires field trips to sites and other location if needed.
- Close engagement with government agencies virtually and physically
- Flexibility to work outside normal work hours to meet deadlines as needed.
